How to Appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
By Akshay Zine, Founder of AuctorisAI · Updated
The short answer
To appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special schema for these AI features. In practice, that means strong SEO fundamentals plus clear, answer-first content that directly addresses the question.
What are the technical requirements?
According to Google Search Central, the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and there is no special markup or AI file to add. [1] Make sure Googlebot can crawl the page, that it is not blocked by robots.txt or noindex, and that the important text is present in the HTML. [2]
- Confirm the page is indexed in Google Search Console.
- Remove accidental noindex or nosnippet directives.
- Make key content available as text, not only in images or scripts.
- Use internal links so Google can discover your supporting pages.
What content gets used as a supporting link?
AI Overviews link to pages that help answer the query and offer more depth. Pages that state the answer early, explain the reasoning and show expertise are the most useful supporting links. Google’s people-first content guidance applies directly. [3]
Structure helps. Use question-style headings, short direct answers under each heading, comparison tables and step lists. Add dates where freshness matters, and cite your sources.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended is a control token for some Gemini model uses. It does not affect Google Search inclusion or ranking, and Google documents it separately from Googlebot. [4] Blocking Googlebot, however, removes you from Search and therefore from AI Overviews.
How do I check whether my brand appears?
Search the questions your buyers ask and note which domains are linked. For a wider view across assistants, the free AuctorisAI Action Report shows which sources ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini cite when they search the live web for your industry.
Common questions
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google states that no special schema is required. Structured data is still useful for describing your page and organization, as long as it matches the visible content.
Can I opt out of AI Overviews but stay in Search?
Page-level nosnippet and related controls limit how your content is shown, including in AI features. Removing snippets can also reduce how you appear in regular results, so weigh the trade-off.
